Change accessibility and language settings

You can make TV and other media accessible for blind or visually impaired U-verse TV subscribers, plus change languages.

What to know

When you turn on secondary audio, you may hear video descriptions with the program’s audio content. You may also hear just the audio content in either English or Spanish. If you don’t hear any sound, the secondary audio isn’t available.

Info about U-verse TV remote control buttons

You’ll use these buttons found on your remote to scroll to and select the topic.

  • MENU: The long, curved button located above the four navigational arrow buttons.
  • Navigational arrows: The up, right, down, and left arrows are rectangular buttons surrounding the OK button.
  • OK: The circular button in the center of the four navigational arrow buttons.
  • Back: A small circular button located to the left and below the four navigational arrow buttons.
  • Info: A small circular button located to the right and below the set of four navigational arrow buttons.

Video descriptions

Secondary audio channels deliver video descriptions for the blind and visually impaired.

You can set up video descriptions with the U-verse TV on-screen menu. This will let you hear audio descriptions of TV shows on a secondary audio channel.

Enable video descriptions

  1. Press MENU on your remote control.
  2. Scroll to and select Options, then Audio/Language.
  3. Choose secondary audio, then Save.
  4. Check program availability since not all shows have video description.

System sound effects

Add system sounds to hear actions, like scrolling or reaching the end of menu items or lists.

  1. Press MENU on your remote control.
  2. Scroll to and select Options, then Audio/Language.
  3. Choose System Sound Effects, then your preferred setting.
  4. Select Save.

Language settings

Secondary audio channels deliver Spanish translations. You can:

  • Update the audio language temporarily to Spanish for the channel being played.
  • Change the default language to Spanish for all channels.

Set a temporary language

  1. Press Info on your remote control.
  2. Select the right arrow twice, then the down arrow.
  3. Press OK to change from English to Spanish audio (if available).
  4. Select EXIT TO TV to return to your programming.

Heads up: Audio will pause briefly while the language change is updated. If there isn’t a brief pause or change in audio, Spanish audio is likely unavailable. If you have system sound effects enabled and hear a low-pitch tone, Spanish audio isn’t available.

Set a default language

  1. Press MENU on your remote control.
  2. Choose Options, then Audio/Language.
  3. Select Audio Language or On-Screen Language.
  4. Follow the prompts to set your default language.
