Cancel or reactivate wireless service for U.S. military or service members

Learn how to cancel or reactivate AT&T wireless service if you’re U.S. military, a service member or a qualifying spouse or dependent.

Military or service member cancellation

Are you a service member being deployed or transferred? Do you want to cancel your wireless service and hold your phone number for when you return? If you’re an eligible service member or qualified spouse or dependent, you may have options.

Thanks to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) and state laws, if eligible, you:
  • Pay no Early Termination Fees (ETF) upon cancellation of your wireless service.
  • Can ask us to hold your number for up to 39 months so long as you reactivate your service within that time frame.
Heads up: If you’re an employee of the Department of State or other non-military U.S. government organization, you may be able to suspend service due to federal government deployment.

Eligibility requirements

AT&T allows a service member, spouse or dependent to cancel service under the SCRA and/or appliable state laws if the service member is:
  • Serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, Commission Corps of Public Health, Commission Corps of NOAA, National Guard, state military forces, or organized militia called into active service by a state governor
  • Going to active duty deployment, basic training, boot camp, full-time training, or annual training
  • Attending a school designated as a service school by federal law or by the secretary of the related military department
  • Transferring from base to base
  • Serving in the Reserves or National Guard and called to active duty
  • Being transferred for 90 days or more (or the time period given by your state of residence)
  • In good standing with your account and agree to pay the latest bill
  • Deployed after your AT&T service contract began
  • Listed as an active member of the U.S. military by the U.S. Department of Defense
You can look for more info on your rights on the National Guard website or similar websites for your state.

Cancel or reactivate online

Be sure and review the requirements for canceling or restarting your service. Then, submit an online military cancel or restore request.

Before you cancel service

Here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • FamilyTalk®: If your account has two or more devices on a FamilyTalk plan and only one will be active, be sure to switch the active device to a current plan.
  • Recent equipment upgrades: If you upgraded equipment within 14 days of your cancellation request:
    • In a store: Make sure to return the equipment to the point of sale. See our AT&T Wireless Return Policy1 for more info.
    • Online: Placed your order online and picked it up in a store? Be sure to return it to an AT&T-owned store so we can waive the restocking fee. Keep in mind, the fee waiver is subject to change.
  • Installment plans: You may be able to keep your device or accessory without making any additional monthly installment payments if you entered into the installment plan before receiving your deployment orders and you are outside the 14-day buyer’s remorse return period.
  • Rollovers: Rollover Data® and Rollover Minutes® expire as soon as we cancel your wireless service.
  • Partial-month charges: If you cancel your service in the middle of a bill period, we’ll prorate your bill. You only pay for the days you had the service—not the full month.
  • Automatic payments: AutoPay automatically ends 90 days after your final bill is paid.
