[AT&T Wireless](https://www.att.com/support/wireless/) # Monitor device locations with AT&T Secure Family The app uses Wi-Fi and GPS to help you track the location of family members’ devices. * * * ## Features, alerts, and more To use the AT&T Secure Family® location tracking and alert features, make sure: - The AT&T Secure Family® Companion app is installed on child devices. - The AT&T Secure Family app is installed on adult devices. Follow in-app setup, then go to yours and your child’s devices to make sure __Wi-Fi__, __location permission__, and __GPS__ are turned __On__ and __battery savings/optimization__ is turned __Off__. The map view shows all family member device locations in a street map or satellite view. It also displays a location callout for the family member’s default device, listing the full address or saved area of the device. To see the current location of a family member’s device, tap __Navigate__. Activate Live Tracking on the Family Map by zooming in on your family member’s device on the map view. You’ll see a blue circle around the family member’s device icon to show that live tracking is active. The parent app uses device-based location to find your child’s device on either a satellite or street-view map. This gives a more accurate location and saves battery on your child’s device. ### Saved Areas With Secure Family, you can create and monitor virtual Saved Areas. These may include home, school, or work. You can use this to get notified when your child’s or other family member’s device enters or leaves a location. Set the saved area to the size you like, from 495 feet up to 6.2 miles. There are two ways to create a Saved Area: __From the Family Hub__ 1. Start at the Family Hub. 2. Tap the __+__ symbol, then select __Saved Area__. 3. Choose __Create Saved Area__. 4. Enter an __Address__ and assign it a __Name__. 5. Adjust the circle around the area to set the size, then select __Next__. 6. Choose if you want to be notified when your child’s device enters or leaves the area, then tap __Create__. __From a child profile__ 1. Start at the Family hub and tap the child’s profile icon. 2. Select the child’s device current location from the map on the child’s profile. 3. Tap __Save Area__. 4. Enter the __Address__ and assign it a __Name__. 5. Adjust the circle around the area to set the size, then select __Next__. 6. Choose if you want to be notified when your child’s device enters or leaves the area, then tap __Create__. ### Arrival and departure alerts Get location-based alerts when your child’s device enters or leaves a saved area like school, home, or a friend’s house. To set up these alerts: 1. Open the Secure Family parent app. 2. Select the Saved Area you want to create an alert for. 3. Choose a family member from the list and then turn on __Get Notified When__. 4. Select __On/Off Arrives__ and __On/Off Leaves__. 5. Select __Create__. ### Scheduled location alerts Secure Family’s scheduled alerts feature sends up to 20 location updates about family members’ devices at specified times. For example, you can set an alert for 3 p.m. to make sure your child arrives home from school. Here’s how to get started: 1. Open the Secure Family parent app. 2. Go to the __Family Hub__ and tap __menu__. 3. Select __Location Alerts__, then __Scheduled Alerts__. 4. Tap __Create Scheduled Alert__. 5. Enter a __name__ for the alert and select the time of day and recurrence of the alert. 6. Assign the alert to the desired family member, then select __Create__. ### Location history See where a family member’s device has been in the past 7 days. Tap __Timeline__ on a family member’s profile details screen. This displays the location history as a timeline and shows a family member’s device location in a 24-hour map view. (You won’t see location history for times when the device’s location permissions or the device itself is turned off.) You can delete your family’s device location history in the Secure Family app settings. Location history cycles after seven days and is deleted on a periodic basis. __Note:__ Only adult profiles can view family member device location histories and timelines. * * * ## FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS [Expand All](https://www.att.com) * * * How do I find my child’s device with AT&T Secure Family? From the parent device: 1. Select the family member device you’re looking for from the Family Hub. 2. Choose the map at the top of the profile. This opens the map view of your child’s device location. 3. Zoom in on the map to your child’s device to get to the map detail screen. What if I can’t see my child’s device location on Secure Family? Don’t panic. Make sure: - The Secure Family Companion app on the child device is paired to your device. - The parent and child devices have __Wi-Fi__ and __GPS__ turned __ON__. - The child device is powered __ON__. - The child device has battery saving/optimization turned __OFF__. - The child device settings has __location permissions__ turned __ON__ with __precise__ __location__ and is set to __Always__. - The child device has __Background App Refresh__ within their OS turned __ON__ (iOS only). - The child device doesn’t have other parental controls apps running. If a child’s device can't be located, it may be turned off or the phone's GPS is deactivated. Can my family members locate my device with Secure Family? Yes. If you want to share your device location with your child, go to Location permissions and select __Always Allow__.
