Set closed captioning and language preferences

Setting your closed captioning preferences

Closed captioning (or CC) is provided by broadcaster’s channels. If available, U-verse subscribers can choose to enable or disable closed captions on their Live TV programming, On Demand, Pay Per View, and Public Education and Government (PEG) channels.

Setting closed captioning preferences for all channels
To enable or disable closed captioning with your remote, press the Options/Enter button on the lower-right corner of your AT&T U-verse remote control and select On or Off.

You can also manage closed captioning settings right from your TV menu:

Press Menu on your U-verse remote control.
Select Options.
Scroll to System, then press OK.
Select Closed Captioning and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once enabled, closed captioning will be displayed on all channels, if available by broadcasters.

Note: If you see only a black rectangle on the TV screen, you may have closed captioning enabled on both your television set and U-verse TV settings. Try disabling closed captioning on the TV set and verifying the settings for U-verse TV via System Information, located in Options > System.

Setting audio language and on-screen language preferences

For individuals whose native language is not English, English language captions improve comprehension and fluency. Captions may also help improve literacy skills. Setting your audio and on-screen language preferences is easy:

Press Menu on your remote control.
Select Options, then Audio/Language and press OK.
Select either Audio Language or On-screen Language.
Next, follow the on-screen directions.
Select Save.

Once enabled, audio and on-screen language preferences will display on all channels, if available by broadcasters.

Digital and Standard closed captioning

Closed captioning includes Digital CC and Standard CC options. These settings refer to EIA-608 and EIA-708 (Electronic Industries Alliance Protocols) closed captioning protocols, respectively. In the majority of cases, the Standard and Digital CC feeds are the same.

Note: In U-verse TV, the Digital CC (EIA-708 CC) standard is not output over the component or HDMI connections. However, the U-verse TV receiver delivers the CC in the video signal before it is output on the connection.
