Activate and use your device

Learn how to get your device running on our network. It can be one you bought from us or a compatible and unlocked device you already own


SIM card

If you have AT&T Wireless or AT&T PREPAIDSM service:
  1. Insert the SIM card into your device and restart it.
  2. Place a test call or browse the web without using Wi-Fi®.
  3. If you:
    • Can place a call or surf the web, you’re good to go!
    • Can’t place a call or surf the web, you have to activate your device. See How to activate your device for next steps.

SIM card tips:
  • Be sure to use the SIM card that came with your new device or order a new one. If you use another SIM card, you may not be able to use some features of your new phone.
  • Not sure how to insert your SIM card? Go to Device Support and pick your device. Then choose View All Solutions and Insert SIM Card.

How to activate your device
Call us so we set you up with rate plans that work with the device you’re using. If you don’t have plans that support your device, it might not work.
  • AT&T Wireless: 800.331.0500
  • AT&T PREPAIDSM: 800.901.9878

Make sure to have your IMEI and SIM (ICCID) numbers handy. To get your:
  • IMEI number, press *#06# on your device
  • SIM (ICCID) number, look under Settings on your device

eSIM for dual-SIM devices

Heads up: If you’re transferring  a dual-SIM device to AT&T, an eSIM won’t transfer.

Have an AT&T PREPAID plan? Contact us to activate your eSIM.

For AT&T Wireless, make sure the eSIM is on an active plan, then download it over Wi-Fi.
  1. Go to your phone settings.
  2. Tap one of the following (what you see depends on your device):
    • AT&T Cellular Plan Ready to be Installed, then Continue
    • Cellular, then Add a Plan
