Learn about the AT&T auto-unlock-device policy—and how to request that your AT&T phone, tablet, or mobile hotspot be unlocked.


AT&T Wireless device unlock

AT&T will automatically unlock eligible Apple and Google devices that are active on an AT&T account.

FYI: Don't have an account with AT&T? You can still unlock an AT&T device once it meets all requirements.

Unlock requirements

The following criteria must be met to unlock an AT&T device.

Device bought 60+ days ago
You purchased your AT&T Wireless device more than 60 days ago. It isn’t active on another AT&T account.

Device paid in full
Your paid for your device in full at purchase or paid it off through an installment plan. Your installment balance must be zero before unlocking.

Device not reported lost/stolen
Your device hasn’t been reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud.

Account is current
If you’re a current AT&T customer, your bill can’t be past due. To make a payment, sign in to your account.

Good to know: Apple Watch is unlocked by default.

Active-duty military personnel

Being deployed for active duty? You don’t have to complete your installment plan or contract to unlock your device. Make sure you select Yes when we ask if you’re deployed military personnel.

AT&T Business unlock requirements

You can unlock business devices on a contract once the service commitment term has ended. The device:

  • Has permission from the company to be unlocked
  • Has a completed contract or term agreement, if applicable
  • Requires a 30-day waiting period to unlock if it was on a two-year contract that was upgraded early

AT&T Prepaid device unlock

AT&T Prepaid® devices with six months of service can be unlocked.

Your AT&T Prepaid device:

  • Isn’t active on another AT&T account
  • Isn’t reported as lost, stolen, or involved with fraud
