AT&T Fiber®

Learn how fiber internet is installed

If you’re considering getting AT&T Fiber service or upgrading your current internet plan to fiber optic internet, learn more about the fiber internet installation process.

Determine if fiber optic internet service is available near you

If you’re planning to get new fiber internet service or upgrade your current internet plan to fiber internet, you will first have to check with the internet service providers in your area to see if fiber-powered internet is available near you. Many customers choose fiber internet for their home internet service because of the fast speeds. For example, if you choose AT&T Fiber, the Internet 300 plan has 15x faster upload speeds than cable¹ and allows you to connect 10+ devices at once throughout your home.² The Internet 1000 plan provides a superfast 1000Mbps connection with 25x faster upload speeds than cable¹ that can support 12+ devices at once, depending on screen size and resolution.

AT&T Fiber is currently available in twenty-one states, and coverage is expanding. AT&T Internet is first in customer satisfaction for residential internet service in the North Central and South regions according to J.D. Power.³ AT&T Fiber and other AT&T Internet plans also provide a reliability rate of more than 99%,4 so you know it’s a service you can count on.

How long does it take for fiber internet to be installed if you are a new customer?

For new AT&T Fiber customers, installation will require a technician to come to your home. You can expect the visit to take about four to six hours. Someone at least 18 years of age will need to be present for the installation, as the technician may need access to your backyard and inside your house.

How long does it take to upgrade to fiber internet?

For current AT&T Internet customers upgrading to AT&T Fiber, installation will require a technician to come to your home. This visit may take up to four hours.

How do fiber optic cables connect to the house?

During your appointment, the technician will first find the best location for the AT&T Wi-Fi® gateway in your home. Then, a new fiber service line may need to be run and fiber extended inside the home to the gateway. If a new fiber service line is needed, it will be buried sometime soon after the installation.
