Why metro Los Angeles has 6 area codes
When a region uses more numbers than one code can hold, new codes are overlaid on the same territory rather than forcing anyone to change numbers. Metro Los Angeles now uses 310, 424, 657, 714, 747 and 818: same neighborhoods, ten-digit dialing, and every one of them covered by its own guide above.

Los Angeles County carries nine codes on one territory, anchored by 213 and 310. The Bay Area splits across 415, 510, 408 and 650 with their overlays, 619 and 858 share San Diego, and 916 covers Sacramento.
