Why metro Chicago has 9 area codes
When a region uses more numbers than one code can hold, new codes are overlaid on the same territory rather than forcing anyone to change numbers. Metro Chicago now uses 224, 312, 464, 630, 708, 773, 815, 847 and 872: same neighborhoods, ten-digit dialing, and every one of them covered by its own guide above.

How Illinois splits
Chicago runs on 312, 773, 708, 872 and 464, Springfield on 217 and 447, and Belleville on 618 and 730. The other four territories follow the same pattern, overlays and all.

An overlay serves the exact same area as the code it joins: new numbers, same map. Chicago carries five (312, 773, 708, 872 and 464), and 224, 331, 447, 730 and 779 overlay their regions the same way.
