Why metro New York has 12 area codes
When a region uses more numbers than one code can hold, new codes are overlaid on the same territory rather than forcing anyone to change numbers. Metro New York now uses 212, 329, 332, 347, 363, 516, 646, 718, 845, 914, 917 and 929: same neighborhoods, ten-digit dialing, and every one of them covered by its own guide above.

How New York got its codes
Every New York area code, in the order it entered service. Splits carved new regions; added codes overlay existing ones, which is why ten-digit dialing is standard.

How New York’s codes work
How New York splits
New York City stacks deepest: 212 and 718 anchor Manhattan and the outer boroughs, with 917 across all five. 516 and 631 split Long Island, 914 covers Westchester, and upstate runs from 518 to Buffalo’s 716.
Overlays share one territory
An overlay serves the exact same area as the code it joins: new numbers, same map. Manhattan stacks 646, 332 and 917 on 212; the outer boroughs stack 347, 929 and 917 on 718; and 363, 934, 329, 838 and 680 overlay their regions the same way.
Area code 917 serves all five boroughs of New York City.
Reading the map
Each color is one code territory. The chip shows the main code with its overlays beneath it, and clicking any region opens that code’s full guide.
Every code links to a full guide.
