Why metro Detroit has 4 area codes
When a region uses more numbers than one code can hold, new codes are overlaid on the same territory rather than forcing anyone to change numbers. Metro Detroit now uses 248, 313, 586 and 810: same neighborhoods, ten-digit dialing, and every one of them covered by its own guide above.

Troy runs on 248 and 947, Muskegon on 231, and Kalamazoo on 269. The other eight territories each carry a single code.
