How area codes work

Splits and overlays. When a region runs out of numbers, it either splits (part of the map gets a new code, like 770 leaving 404 in 1995) or gets an overlay (a second code on the same map, like 678). Overlays are why your neighbor’s number can start differently from yours.

Codes stopped meaning geography for cell phones. Numbers port: people carry their area code between cities, carriers and states. A 212 in Atlanta or a 404 in Seattle is completely normal.

Ten digits is the norm. Overlay regions always required the area code; the 2021 988 rollout moved most remaining regions to 10-digit local dialing too.

Area code FAQ

What is an area code?
The first three digits of a 10-digit North American phone number, identifying the region where the number was issued. The system dates to 1947, when 86 original codes covered the U.S. and Canada.
How do I find out who called me?
Open the guide for the caller’s area code above: each one covers the region’s carriers and prefixes, current spam patterns, and how to block unwanted calls automatically.
Does an area code tell me where someone is?
Only where the number was issued. Cell numbers port and travel, so a caller’s code shows their number’s origin, not their location.
What's the difference between a split and an overlay?
A split divides a region’s map between an old and new code. An overlay adds a second code to the same map, which is why overlay regions dial 10 digits.
Are any area codes toll-free?
Toll-free numbers use 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888. Every geographic area code, from 201 to 989, bills as a normal domestic call.
Why did my area stop allowing 7-digit dialing?
The 2021 rollout of 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) required regions with a 988 prefix to dial 10 digits, and overlays had already required it in the big metros.
How do area codes work?
An area code is the first three digits of a 10-digit US phone number, defined by the North American Numbering Plan. It ties the number to a geographic region; the remaining seven digits identify the local exchange and line. Every code’s cities, counties and overlays are mapped in the directory above.
How do area codes get assigned?
NANPA, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, assigns them. When a region runs low on numbers, NANPA either splits the territory or layers a new overlay code onto the same area, announced years in advance. Each state guide above lists its newest codes.
Sources: prefix and carrier assignments from the NANPA central-office code registry; population figures from the U.S. Census Bureau; spam-pattern indicators from FTC Do Not Call filings and AT&T ActiveArmor® network telemetry. Facts are rebuilt from these sources at build time; the page regenerates monthly.
