Why metro carmel has 2 area codes
When a region uses more numbers than one code can hold, new codes are overlaid on the same territory rather than forcing anyone to change numbers. Metro Carmel now uses 317 and 463: same neighborhoods, ten-digit dialing, and every one of them covered by its own guide above.

Indianapolis runs on 317 and 463, Evansville on 812 and 930, and Hammond on 219. The other three territories each carry a single code.
