Area Code 833

Toll-free calling across North America

833 is not a place: it’s a toll-free code, the newest toll-free code, used by businesses and organizations across the U.S. and Canada. Calls to an 833 number are free from any U.S. phone. Because these numbers look official and carry no location clues, scammers spoof them constantly: this guide covers who really calls from 833, how to check a number, and how to block the fakes.

Who called me from 833?

Quick answerA real 833 call comes from a business or organization: banks, pharmacies, delivery services, customer support lines. But caller ID spoofing is rampant on toll-free codes, so an 833 number alone proves nothing. If there’s no voicemail, let it go: legitimate callers leave messages.

Toll-free numbers are assigned through FCC-supervised registrars, not tied to any city. That makes them useful to national companies, and equally useful to scammers who rent them by the thousand or fake them outright. Here is what people are reporting from 833 numbers.

Is this 833 number a scam? Check it in 60 seconds

1. Don’t trust the caller ID

Spoofing software can display any 833 number. The number on your screen is a claim, not a fact.

2. Hang up, then call the official number

If the caller claims to be your bank or a delivery service, find the company’s number on its website or your card and call that. Never call back the number that called you.

3. Never pay or verify by phone

No legitimate company asks for gift cards, wire transfers, or your full Social Security number on a call they placed to you.

4. Report and block

Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM). Report calls at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and block the number on your phone.

How 833 numbers work

Toll-free means the business receiving the call pays for it, not you. Calls to 833 numbers are free from U.S. landlines and mobiles, and the same number works from Canada and other North American Numbering Plan countries. From overseas, toll-free numbers generally don’t work or aren’t free. Numbers are assigned through registrars supervised by the FCC, first come, first served, which is why an 833 number says nothing about where a company operates. Dialing is always the full ten digits, with 1 in front from a landline. Many businesses also enable text messaging on their toll-free numbers.

The toll-free family: 800 to 833

Seven codes share the toll-free pool. When one fills up, the next opens. 822 is reserved as the next code but is not in service, so any “822 number” today is fake. See the full family on the toll-free codes guide.

Area code 833 FAQ

Is an 833 number free to call?
Yes, from any U.S. phone, landline or mobile. The business receiving the call pays for it. From outside North America, toll-free numbers usually don’t connect or aren’t free.
Where is the 833 area code located?
Nowhere. 833 is a toll-free code, not a geographic one, so an 833 caller can be anywhere in the U.S. or Canada.
Is 833 a scam area code?
The code itself is legitimate and used by real businesses. But scammers spoof toll-free numbers constantly, so treat any unexpected 833 call with care: hang up and call the company through its official number.
Why do scammers use 833 numbers?
Toll-free numbers are inexpensive to rent, look official, and carry no location clues. Spoofers also fake them outright without renting anything.
Can I text an 833 number?
Often yes. Many businesses enable text messaging on their toll-free numbers for order updates and support. Unexpected texts from 833 numbers, especially about deliveries or tolls, are a common scam pattern: don’t tap links.
When did the 833 code start?
833 numbers went into service in June 2017, the newest toll-free code.
Is 822 a real toll-free code?
Not yet. 822 is reserved as the next toll-free code but is not in service, so a call or text showing an 822 number is fake.
How do I block 833 spam calls?
Block individual numbers on your phone, forward scam texts to 7726, and use a network-level filter. AT&T ActiveArmor blocks known scam callers automatically and is included with AT&T unlimited plans.
How do I get my own 833 number?
Toll-free numbers are assigned first come, first served through FCC-supervised providers. Businesses typically get one through their phone service provider.
Do 833 numbers work from Canada?
Yes. Toll-free codes cover the North American Numbering Plan, so the same number works from Canada and many Caribbean countries, usually free from the caller’s side.
