Coming: area code 565 was approved in 2025 as an overlay for the 912 region; new Savannah-area lines will draw 565 once 912 runs out.

Why Metro Atlanta Has 5 Area Codes

Atlanta started with one: 404, from the original 1947 batch. The suburbs split off as 770 in 1995, then growth stacked three overlays on the whole metro: 678 (1998), 470 (2010) and 943 (2022). Same rates, same dialing; a 770 call is exactly as local as a 404 one.

Georgia’s Next Area Code: 565

Approved in 2025, area code 565 will overlay 912 across Savannah and Southeast Georgia when 912 runs out of numbers. Nothing changes for existing 912 numbers: same phones, same rates, no renumbering. Once 565 activates, new lines in the region simply start drawing the new code.

Georgia Area Code FAQ

How many area codes does Georgia have?
Ten active codes: 229, 404, 470, 478, 678, 706, 762, 770, 912 and 943. An 11th, 565, was approved in 2025 as an overlay for the Savannah region.
What area code is Atlanta?
404 inside the I-285 Perimeter, 770 in the suburbs, with 678, 470 and 943 overlaying the whole metro. Any of the five can be a legitimate Atlanta number.
What is Georgia's oldest area code?
404, assigned in 1947 as one of the original 86 North American area codes. It once covered the entire state.
What is Georgia's newest area code?
943, added to metro Atlanta in 2022. The next will be 565, approved as a 912 overlay for Savannah and the coast.
Do I have to dial 10 digits in Georgia?
In the overlay regions, yes: all metro Atlanta codes and 706/762 require the area code on every call. Single-code regions moved to 10 digits with the 2021 988 rollout.
What area code will a new Georgia number get?
It depends on where you are: in metro Atlanta, new lines usually draw 943 or 470; in North Georgia, 762; elsewhere, the region's own code. Once 565 activates, new Savannah-area lines will draw it.
Are 706 and 762 the same region?
Yes. 762 overlays 706 exactly, covering North Georgia from Columbus through Athens to Augusta. Same rates, same area.
