Why Houston and Dallas Stack So Many Codes
Texas’s two giant metros stack codes deeper than anywhere outside California. Houston dials five on one map: the original 713 (1947), 281, 832, 346 and 2025’s 621. Dallas dials four: the original 214, 972, 469 and 945, with Fort Worth’s 817/682 next door. Same rates, same 10-digit dialing; only the year a number was issued differs.
Texas’s Newest Area Code: 621
Texas’s newest code went live in January 2025: area code 621 overlays the Houston metro alongside 713, 281, 832 and 346. Nothing changed for existing numbers: same phones, same rates, no renumbering. New Houston lines simply began drawing 621, with the new code projected to cover the metro’s growth for roughly a decade.
