Area Code 621

Houston and surrounding communities

Area code 621 is Houston’s newest overlay. It went live in January 2025 across the same territory as 713, 281, 832 and 346, from Alvin to Baytown and beyond. New numbers are only starting to be issued, so a 621 caller ID is still rare: this guide covers what the code is, who might be calling, and what it means for your own number.

Who called me from area code 621?

Quick answerA real 621 call comes from Houston or nearby communities, but 621 numbers are brand new and still rare, so treat an unfamiliar one with extra care: caller ID can be spoofed. If there’s no voicemail, let it go: legitimate callers leave messages.
  • No voicemail? Let it go. Real callers leave messages.
  • Recognize the pattern? Check the number in the prefix lookup.
  • Getting repeats? ActiveArmor® blocks and labels them automatically.
  • Same prefix calling again? Compare it against this month’s most-reported Houston-area prefixes, right on this page.
  • Curious who issued a number? Every assigned prefix belongs to a carrier - the registry will name each 621 prefix as it comes into service.

No 621 spam patterns have been reported yet: the code is too new. Spoofers imitate the established Houston codes first, so the current patterns below come from the 713 board.

Is area code 621 a scam?

No. 621 is a legitimate Houston area code.

It went live in January 2025 as the newest layer over the whole Houston region, serving the same territory as 713, 281, 832 and 346. But legitimacy of the code says nothing about any single call. Scammers spoof local numbers constantly.

The code is realLive since January 2025; carrier prefixes are only beginning to roll out, so 621 numbers are still rare.

Scam texts from area code 621 numbers

The most common area code 621 text scam is the “wrong number” opener: a friendly message that pretends to know you, then moves the chat to WhatsApp and eventually to an investment pitch.

Scripts currently circulating:

“U at home?” · “Are you busy tomorrow?” · “How are you doing?”
Delivery-problem and job-offer texts that link out to a login page

Don’t reply. A response marks your number as live. Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM), and AT&T ActiveArmor® filters known senders automatically.

How number spoofing works in area code 621

Caller ID is easy to forge. Spoofing fakes the number a call displays. The real owner of that 621 number isn’t involved and usually has no idea. That’s why blocking one number rarely stops the calls.

  • A call from a number almost identical to yours(same 621 and prefix) is “mirror spoofing.” A missed call from your own number is never worth returning.
  • Strangers calling you back saying you called them?Your 621 number is being spoofed. It typically passes within days, and you don’t need a new number. Report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
  • The caller-ID checkmark:AT&T verifies network calls (STIR/SHAKEN). A verified mark means the displayed number wasn’t faked. No mark doesn’t always mean scam, but treat it with more caution.

Spoofed or not, the rule holds: unexpected caller, no voicemail? Let it go.

621 area code prefix & carrier lookup

The three digits after the area code identify the carrier a number was issued to. 621 is so new that no carrier prefixes are in service yet: the registry below shows only the standard service codes every area code reserves. Carrier prefixes will appear here as numbers start shipping; the boards on the 713, 281, 832 and 346 guides show what a mature Houston registry looks like.

This isn’t a reverse phone lookup: no legitimate free service can tell you who owns a specific number. What a prefix does show, once assigned: the carrier that issued it, whether it’s wireless, landline or VoIP, and the community it belongs to.

The 621, explained

Area code 621: more than a number in Houston

In Houston, a new area code is a population milestone. The 621 went live in January 2025, the fifth code layered over the same territory as 713, 281, 832 and 346, and the clearest sign yet of how fast the region keeps growing. Carrying one today marks you as one of Houston’s newest arrivals: the numbers are only beginning to ship.

The map tells its own story: Houston and surrounding communities, with 281, 713 and 832 sharing the same streets today. Several codes, one local calling area, no long-distance between any of them - only the 621 came first.

Keeping a 621 matters here. An existing 621 number ports to a new phone, a new carrier, or a new AT&T line, and stays yours anywhere in the U.S. New lines in the area often draw 281 instead - one more reason locals hold on to theirs.

Area code 621 FAQ

What area code is 621?
621 is the newest area code for Houston, Texas and the surrounding communities. It went live in January 2025 and covers the exact same territory as 713, 281, 832 and 346.
Is area code 621 real or a scam?
621 is a legitimate Houston area code, but it is brand new and numbers are still rare. If you get a 621 call today and you don’t know anyone with a new Houston number, be cautious: spoofing a new code is a known scam tactic. AT&T ActiveArmor labels suspected spam automatically.
Why did Houston get another area code?
Growth. The 713, 281, 832 and 346 pools were projected to run out of assignable numbers, so regulators approved 621 as an all-services overlay. Nothing changes for existing numbers; new lines simply start drawing from the new code.
Does 621 change my existing Houston number?
No. Overlays never change existing numbers. Your 713, 281, 832 or 346 number stays exactly as it is; 621 only affects newly issued numbers.
How do I get a 621 number?
You don’t choose it directly: carriers assign numbers from whichever Houston code has inventory. As the older pools empty, new AT&T lines in the region will increasingly come with 621. There is no fee or action needed.
What area does 621 cover?
The full Houston overlay territory: Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston, Brazoria, Montgomery, Liberty, Chambers and Waller counties, including Houston, Sugar Land, Baytown, Spring and the communities listed on this page.
When did 621 go live?
January 2025. It was approved in 2023 as relief for the Houston numbering region, and carriers began activating it in early 2025. Numbers are still being issued gradually.
What time zone is area code 621?
Central Time: UTC-6 in winter, UTC-5 during daylight saving. The live local time is at the top of this page.
How do I dial a 621 number?
Dial all 10 digits: 621 plus the seven-digit number, the same as every Houston code. From outside the U.S., add the +1 country code first.
Why did I get a call from a 621 number?
Either someone with a brand-new Houston number, or a spoofed caller ID. Because 621 numbers are still scarce, an unfamiliar 621 call deserves more suspicion than a 713 or 832 call. Let it go to voicemail; real callers leave messages.
Is 621 a toll-free number?
No. 621 is a geographic area code for Houston, not a toll-free prefix. U.S. toll-free numbers start with 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 or 833.
What’s the difference between 621 and 713?
Age, and nothing else that matters day to day. 713 is Houston’s original 1947 code; 621 is the 2025 newcomer. They cover the same map, calls between them are local, and both dial with 10 digits.
Can I keep a 621 number if I move?
Yes. Numbers port: a 621 number goes with you to a new phone, a new carrier or a new city anywhere in the U.S., just like any other area code.
Why did I get a text message from a 621 number?
Treat it carefully. Scam texts often rotate onto new codes because the numbers have no reputation yet. Don’t reply or tap links; forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) and delete it. AT&T ActiveArmor filters known scam senders automatically.
Will a 621 number work everywhere?
Yes. It’s a standard North American number: calls, texts and apps treat it like any Houston number. Some older web forms may not recognize very new codes at first; that resolves as databases update.
Sources: city and store data from AT&T records; prefix and carrier assignments from the public numbering registry (pulled July 2026). Facts regenerate monthly.
