Getting started

Make sure you’re in the U.S. and on our wireless network.
We recommend connecting to Wi-Fi® before downloading the update.
Although there should be no impacts to settings or data, we recommend that your device is backed up to iCloud or iTunes before updating.
After you update, you might see the Activation Lock screen on your iPhone or iPad. If you enter your Apple ID and password and still can’t sign in, visit Apple Support: Find My iPhone Activation Lock.

If your device isn’t eligible for the latest update, follow the steps to update and verify the latest software available for your device. Next, view the Previous updates section for details about the most recent software installed on your device.

Plug your device in to power and connect to Wi-Fi.
From the General screen, select Software Update.
Then Download and Install.
Tap Install. If asked, enter your passcode.

Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone.
Tap My Watch, then General.
Tap Software Update.
Download the software to the iPhone, and then continue on with Apple Watch.
Maintain a steady Internet connection on both Apple Watch and iPhone during this process to ensure a successful software update.

Tap Settings, then General.
Tap About.
If a Carrier update is available, you'll be prompted to install it.
If the iOS version and the current software update details match, the device has the latest software.
