I LOVE this phone!

This is my first smartphone, so I have no other smartphone experience to compare it to. I have owned it only a week, but I feel compelled to review this already because my experience has been so great.
The Platform: What I love - Windows 8 platform. ease of changing around the tiles and changing the size of tiles on the home screen, being able to make a shopping note and pin it just above all my other tiles where it is easily seen when I look at my phone, being able to pin the contact info for important people right to the home screen, the store has all the apps I need. I am not a gamer, so that is not an issue. I really want it more for productivity and social networking, and it seems to have everything I need for that. By the way, I (and my kids) love the flashlight app! Very awesome!
Battery Life: For me, battery life is great, but I am not a super heavy data user. At least I don't think I am. I have spent a lot of time on the phone just getting things set up and learning how to use it. I think it has gone down to maybe about 85%, maybe a tad bit less, by the end of the day, and then I just plug it in at night.
Durability: After reading other reviews, I was worried about the screen breaking easily; however, before my phone case arrived, I dropped the phone onto the hardwood floor; it dropped on the face, and the screen did not break and the phone did not scratch! If the edges had not been rubberized it surely would have scratched around the edges. I do have a screen protector on it, so I didn't expect the screen to scratch, but I was hoping it would not shatter.
Design: The size and shape is great. I had a smaller slider phone before and I never felt like I was speaking into the speaker, but with this phone, I do. Speaking of the speaker, the sound on this phone is really great. It sounds like I'm talking to someone in the next room, and the speaker phone is nice and clear and not too tinny sounding. I LOVE the sound of music through headphones on this phone. Very nice. I think I will really enjoy listening to my industrial workout music, as well as classical music. The only thing I worry about is that the phone is thin on the edges, and the ability to grip is not so good; until I got my case, I was afraid I would drop it all the time. I ordered this phone case : Diztronic Matte Back Black Flexible TPU Case. I love it because it has a thick edge around the front opening that is just thick enough to protect the screen if it falls. It also provides a more secure grip. The only complaint I do have about this phone is that, without a case, the buttons are not so easy to find, and I found it difficult to know if I was pressing them hard enough. The case that I got for it solved this problem. It is much easier to find the power button, and it is much easier to press the other buttons (volume and camera). I do wish that I could just touch the screen to wake the phone up, instead of having to push the on button, but that is a really minor complaint.
Camera: I LOVE this camera, and it will definitely replace my pocket camera. I took some pictures without the lights on in my house at night to see how well it could perform. It is awesome! I couldn't even see my son (the subject) through the viewfinder because it was so dark, but after the flash came on and the camera took the shot, I had a perfect, bright picture of my son. The flash is really great, and the camera shoots pictures very quickly, with very little lag time in low light and none in full light. Totally opposite of my pocket camera (which is a great brand but is horrible compared with this phone). I love the front-facing camera, too, though I wish the quality on that camera was as great as the back camera (which is awesome, crisp, clear)
Checking Voicemail: I am used to having to call voicemail manually and give my password every time on my old phone. With this Windows phone, it stores my password and calls voicemail automatically for me. The first couple of times, I didn't even know what the phone was doing. It's great! I don't have to stop an put in my password every time I want to check voicemail.
Further information about myself as a user: Though have not had a smartphone in the past, I do have both an iPad and a Windows 8 laptop and can easily move around in both of those platforms. Furthermore, I owned and Android tablet for a short time, but I returned it because I did not find the platform as intuitive as Apple iPad or Windows.
I HIGHLY recommend this phone, especially if you like or plan to upgrade to the Windows 8 platform.

Lost my Android, needed a phone quickly, chose a WP8x without doing research and I'm not crazy about it.

I lost my Android phone and my main concern was, I need to get something fast! I'm a creature of habit and wish I could've gotten what I already had (HTC Inspire), but it wasn't available. I knew I liked the HTC phone and assumed what I chose was an Android without doing my homework. Yes, that's totally my fault. Almost every app I had on my Android was free and easy to navigate thru, with the Windows Phone 8x, I can't get most of my apps, it's like they're non-existant (Pandora or iheart radio, WGN morning local news, great kids apps, & Out of Milk shopping list app) just to name a few. Loved ow when I uploaded pics to FB, I had the choice of what album to uploathem to. The FB Windows app doesn't do that or IF it does, I haven't figured it out yet. I also find that when trying to post a comment, I have to enter it and then re-enter it multiple times to get it to actually go thru, and even sometimes then, it doesn't work and I get kicked out of FB. With the WP8x, I can download free ringtones and make them specific to certain contacts, but I can't download different text message tones. Again, if it can be done, I haven't figured it out. I also noticed that even though I choose a specific ringtone for someone, it doesn't play the entire ringtone. It does it for about 5 seconds and then the called ID kicks in and says their name. Not sure if there's a way to turn that off or not, but I'd just like to only hear the ringtone. So far, I do like some of camera options as I'm a picture junky and like to mess around with that type of stuff. Again, I'm only 2 weeks into having the WP8x and I'm sure there are a bunch of great things about it, but I wanted to be able to at least have access to everything I had before on my Android as far as apps were concerned, but that's not the case. Oh, and I'd kinda like to turn off the auto word detect thing for texting, but I doubt that's an option. The Android also had 4 different volume controls which I liked so they all count be different (incoming ring level, messaging, notifications and alarms). As far as I'm aware, the volume for alerts/texts and ringtones are always the same.
If anyone knows a fix to my quirky issues, I'm open to hear your advice. ;)

Bad battery, bad buttons

The phone is light, thin and fairly indestructible. I can't even scratch the plastic back or screen. While it is obviously well-made, it feels "plasticky" to me.
The screen is very nice, images and pictures are smooth and clear. And the sound is louder and clearer than I could imagine a phone could be.
Tethering and wifi have both worked well when needed/available.
I had no issues with the camera but didn't use it too much (I'm not a big picture taker).
The buttons are difficult to see/feel in the dark or in a pocket until the phone is picked up. Grabbing it, it's hard not to push one of them accidentally and that can start applications like the camera or a bing search screen or otherwise change your volume settings. It's particularly annoying when I'm trying to use the flashlight in unexpected manual work situations.
The phone eats through it's battery fast. My phone is 1.5 years old and 3-4 hours of on-and-off web surfing on message boards will kill a full cell. It recharges very very slowly using a usb connection to a PC - sometimes it will appear to be charging even when it isn't.
There are a couple of issues with the operating system but nothing major. Coming from an iPhone 3s I remember noticing that the screen was less responsive and less easy to "type" on but it wasn't by much and I don't notice it now. There's also a little clipping with IE - in landscape mode the bottom right edge goes off the screen. I got used to that also.
It's nice being able to play around with the tile sizes and arrangements. I also like that the phone can be used as a usb storage device albeit there's not much space for large images/videos (vs my old iPhones that had to be jailbroken to allow that). Otherwise it would be hard for me to explain to someone what the advantages of Windows are over iOS.
I'm not an apps user other than Kindle and the flashlight so won't comment on that other than to lament about the lack of bank apps for uploading checks.
This is my 3rd smartphone and while I had regrets about losing my old iPhone I will have none when I replace this with something with similar features.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Good smart phone for med users, not those who think its a computer

for a user who isn't to hot on running a batt down to the last drop but well ok to make uses as radio or music stream, movies well maybe one movie at a 2 hour length would be good the phone tend to get hot being on all the time, connect the external wire or some sort of good speaker system you have a nice output in sound really good bass no eq though, so make sure the external speakers have some sort of eq, its well ok for making it in to an ipod/mp3 player maybe movie center as well.
batt life well depends on the use of how long you want to be on speaker talking or some games or like i said watching a movie but the batt id have to say does last, watch for to many the running task in back ground this can also play a part to lowering batt,
watch being on the wifi all the time that plays a part to draining batt with facebook, skype, twitter, or other apps like scout gps, it wouldn't even stop scout gps but i think thats just a glitch in the app it self,
other then that the back light fades on normal hand held talking, the main thing i hated more is how you cant see the phone in the day light, but to answer the phone without needing to see it you can work with the setting.
many are right on apps not many and i have reviewed some. i dont trust a lot of developers for apps unless its from the main company though, i have seen questions asking for details after getting them, i wouldn't give to my best friend ffs, most seem to want to get in to bank accounts or they have access to the phone so yea paranoia set in on the apps found.
as most creators or developers abuse windows creating unlawful apps or programs anyway to get your id or bank info.
so be careful choosing apps remove asap if you feel they dont fit ya fancy.
read the reviews too most importantly, how ever im not a fan of windows after the xp, and windows 2000 where you had better freedom of choice, as where linux its all about the freedom of choice in all areas, windows copy catted mac, linux and mix a bit of widows in to the windows vista to the windows 8, some windows geeks will disagree but they lack the education in linux to prove that and i can bet im more safer on linux then any widows systems but working with windows 7 i was ok to keep using windows, now the os 8 for pc i hated very much wont ever use it ill stay with windows 7, but windows 8 i feel belongs on the phone its just a much better smooth run, as im sure the surface tablet will to.
with a windows your block from correcting any programming as where in linux and as experienced in pcs or operating systems linux is best and you dont need decompression programs to fix screw ups or take out the traps people abuse programming to steal your information, id , and bank info, and less hijakes and vary little viruses and its more stable then any windows i have ever worked with, most of those issues in a windows device or pc are designed to screw up all windows,
so you have to really look in to protection on a windows phone as well as its pcs os too.
this phone only has available space after taking out the many useless paying apps to gain up to 5 something gb you get less in its space of 8gb i was vary un happy of that.
so for people that dont expect to use the phone like an ipod and expect to use it as a pc for all works. the phone is best for the economist user not the abusing user who has the think they need the phone when crapping in the bathroom or always got to gossip or talk about people all day on the phone. i'm not unhappy of this phone frankly im impressed my self.
those who have boohooed and cry you need to look at the positive side not the negative side for the uses this phone has what most says negative there is very little to boo hoo about its a phone ffs not a computer.
so in all i did abuse this phone only a few issues was found to be of a problem not what al had to say fully negative about.
Prosover all a good phone with fast responce, use head phones to talk, good mp3 player if not using many apps, will hold batt life limited on uses up to 2 days, some apps useful and works just fine and safe, haven't had wifi issues
Consone issue a one time ending of call then redialed, one time phone restart by it self, get a bit over heated from long use, not a lot of good apps that is trusting

Good for a little while

This phone was very good for the first close 9 months. The appstore is a massive drawback it does not have a real instagram or many other popular apps. Everything else was fine until the phone said my SIM card was missing or invalid. AT&T put my SIM card in to begin with and took it out and put it back in when I took it to the store. However that isn't the only problem. It has just recently randomly turning off during calls, browsing, texting, anytime it turns off at least twice a day. Not a good phone. My lesson is looks may be deceiving...

Very Poor and Limited. Choose a Different Smartphone!

I was so excited to get this as my first smart phone because I was unable to get a Galaxy. I heard the phone was great. When I first got the phone i was excited. It had cool live tiles and you could hook up facebook and your text messages could be seen in strings and you could changethe screen and color setting around.
Then I found that the camera was really sensitive and most pictures turn out blury. The shound when you are actually speaking on the phone is terrible. I am big into using Instagram and snapchate along with tons of other apps. But on Windows the only apps you can get are the ones that Windows has created or supports. Neither of these are avaliable and tons of other apps even avaliable to normal HTC or Android devices are not avaliable on this phone. I also cant stand that there is not enough memory on this phone. Only 8 GB and you can't put in any type of memory card or sd card, so I am constantly having to delete and redownload certain apps so that I can use certain apps.
It also has the problem of turning on and off by itself multimple times when nothing is anywhere near the power button. It will shut off on me in the middle of a text or a call, etc. and It takes me 10 minutes toget it back to normal. This happens at least two or three times a week.
I would strongly advise you to get almost any other smart phone than this phone! I am so bummed it nowhere as great as I thought. I will never get another Windows phone.

Q: would you recommend this as a business phone? I was always a windows user and now starting a non profit. Will need to replace my IPhone. Are the new apps being developed for windows 8 and 10? Plan on getting the Surface tablet and want eerything to work together.

- A: I would actually reccommend that. Windows phones are more for business then fun and games( since less then 200,000 apps in the market place). I would also go for the 8X especially since its HTC and it contains beats audio which is a premium audio source. So for your non-profit I would say windows phone is good but for a small business for profit then Android all the way.13 years agoHelpful?
