I'm a 15 year old guy from California, and I was just looking for a good texter that was appealing and had good functionality.
Let's start with an overall summary of this phone. It's got a great screen and it feels good in the hand, but has a lot of software issues and is rather delicate. I also DO NOT have the data plan, as the web browsing experience may cause bugs.
I got this phone 3 weeks ago and it is still in good shape, I have dropped it twice on concrete from about 5 feet, and it hasn't had many issues.
Overall:
I really like this phone because I had a terrible Nokia and this was in general a lot better. The screen is large and provides great color and the keyboard is roomy.
Messaging:
In terms of messaging, this is a decent phone. The keyboard has a nice solid feel and the buttons press down nicely, however there is a bit of keyboard lag, especially if you are a fast texter. I send and recieve probably around 300-400 texts a day, and if I don't delete them when they reach about 100-150, my phone lags. Also, when there are too many messages, the phone for some reason will not send messages... Which will call for a inbox/outbox clearing and a phone restart. The messaging is good, and it has an optional landscape and regular phone touchscreen keyboard, but I never use those because it is too difficult (and why there's a keyboard...).
Functionality:
In terms of functionality in calling quality it is decent, however the speaker phone is pretty quiet. It often takes multiple taps on the phone just to do a simple task, and I feel like there are a lot of excess tools that I don't need. However, I like the touch screen, but it is not nearly as responsive as an iPhone or iTouch. If your going to be a doing a lot of calling, you have a widget tool that can hold up to 5 favorite contacts, each displaying their pictures on the homescreen (if you choose to leave the widget open like I do). Your call log can be opened by pressing the 'call out' once and it is fairly clear. For the most part, this phone is solid and should fit most teens needs, but I would not recommend it as a smart phone (get a Blackberry or iPhone if your willing to pay the money).
Software:
In this aspect, I'm rather disappointed. The software isn't slow, but it definately isn't fast. Relative to an iPhone, it moves at about half speed. Often the D-Pad on the keyboard will not work when adding the actual phone numbers for new contacts, and there are several other annoying glitches in the phone. There is also an excess of ways to make messages, since all you really need is the keyboard. My biggest problem however is the Alarm system, which is very complicated and I think (but I'm not sure) changes by itself or will just fail to work properly at times. Don't get me wrong, it still works, but it definately needs improvement.
Camera:
The camera is pretty good but it really NEEDS a flash and an auto-adjust feature. There is no zoom as well. However, it does take good pictures when there is adequate lighting.
Durability:
Sliding motion was good for the first few days, but after a while when the phone is slid open, you can push down on the touch screen and the back side will tap against the top of the keyboard section of the phone making a loose/rattle feeling. It feels very delicate and scratches easily so be careful. Although heavy and somewhat large, it is still easy to drop because it has a very "slippery sort of feel", being different from an iPhone. Also, the back piece of the phone is almost impossible to remove, at least in my case.
Summary:
Well, it's not better than an iPhone, but it is good for texting. It's browser is decent, and it looks nice. It's a beautiful phone and takes decent pictures. Although it lacks in the areas of simplicity and functionality, I still really like this phone. I hoped this review helped, and don't forget to say that it did :).
P.S. If you turn off the vibration feedback, transitions, and turn the backlight to the lowest setting, you can conserve a lot of power as well as limit the occasional short freeze. And put a lock password so if someone steals it they won't be able to use it!
