Restore dial tone and fix echo

Troubleshoot problems with your dial tone or echo on the line.

Tips to fix dial tone and echo

FYI: Only plans that includes phone service will have a dial tone. Don’t have phone service? See what plans are available

If your plan includes phone and you can’t get a dial tone or make a call, try these options:
  • Make sure all cords and wires are secure and not damaged.
  • Use another phone handset to see if you get a dial tone.
  • Check all your AT&T services for an outage in your area. The issue may be more than the dial tone.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi® gateway by unplugging the power cord for 10 seconds, then plugging it back in.
  • Plug your phone into the back of the Wi-Fi gateway. This may allow you to make and receive calls until the problem has been fixed.

Tips to fix echo or bad reception

  • Lower or adjust the volume on the phone handset.
  • Change the frequency or channel if you’re using a cordless phone.
  • Make sure all cords are secure and undamaged.
  • Use another phone handset to check for echoes or reception.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi gateway by unplugging the power cord for 10 seconds, then plugging it back in.
  • Plug your phone into the back of the Wi-Fi gateway. This may allow you to make and receive calls until the problem has been fixed.
Head’s up: Restarting your Wi-Fi gateway will interrupt all AT&T services.
