This review will be like a lot of other reviews on this site, but it's the truth. This BlackBerry is really one of the best phones not just that I've owned, but that I've ever used or seen. I almost got an iPhone, but I liked the feel of a tactile keyboard. I almost got some other Windows Mobile based phone, but once you start using the BlackBerry OS, the interface is just so easy to use, you start to wonder why other phones make doing similar tasks so complicated. All the options you want are right where you expect them to be. It's really hard to explain, you just need to go to the store and get your hands on it to really see the benefit of it. Try adding appointments or tasks, sending a text. Once you use it for a few minutes, everything seems like a breeze.
I didn't really need a phone for the internet, just wanted something with a full keyboard for texting, but all the other features are just so awesome I can't put the phone down. Here are some other things I use it for:
-The scroll wheel works just like a mouse. I love how you can hold shift and scroll the wheel to highlight text to copy and paste. You can also adjust the speed of the scroll wheel. Some people like it fast, some like it slow, take your pick.
-Texting is a breeze, and like the Palm it organizes your texts with people as conversations, so you can easily see what you or the other person have said previously.
-The keyboard is really well laid out. The space between the keys minimizes wrong key strokes or hitting two keys at once. There's also a nifty autotext function, where you can edit the dictionary with words you commonly misspell, or you can put something like "ive" and make it automatically change this to "I've".
-I organize all my calendar and appointments with ease. This was my most important feature while I was phone shopping. It amazes me that other phones make this process so complicated. The BlackBerry system is designed to get you right to where you need as quickly as possible. There's no point middling through menus and submenus. Open the calendar for today, scroll to the time and just start typing a new appointment. It's that simple.
-The task list is separate from the memo pad and calendar, and is SUPER useful for making to-do lists for yourself, and allows you to track them to closure. You can give the tasks statuses like Not Started or In Progress.
-Since it has a regular 3.5mm headset jack, you can plug in any regular headphones, or use the included two-ear headset. I listen to mp3's in my car through my stereo's auxiliary jack, and at my desk with regular headphones. Sound quality is really good.
-I take a bunch of pictures, the camera is really good for a phone.
-And since it has a USB jack, you can just plug it to your computer and it acts like a jump drive, so any media (music, videos, pictures, etc) can be dragged and dropped in Windows. It's all so simple and intuitive.
-The included BlackBerry software CD allows you to back up all your calendar, contacts, etc. Great if you're switching phones, or if you just want to be safe, like if you have a lot of contacts.
-The battery life is really good, and it's great that you can just plug it into your computer (assuming that computer has the BlackBerry software installed) with any USB wire that you'd use with a digital camera to charge it up, in case you don't have your AC adapter with you. On a full charge I can go about 3 days with average use, including calls, texts, calendar use and mp3 playback.
-The screen has a light sensor, so it can tell if your surroundings have a lot of light or not, and automatically makes the screen brighter or darker, or turns the keyboard backlight on or off.
-Clarity with my bluetooth headset is great. And the voice dialing works better than anything I've seen. You don't have to make a voice print of you saying everyone's name in your phone book. You just say the name as it's shown in your phone book and it automatically matches your voice to the contact name.
-The speakerphone works really well. I've stood about 6 feet away from the phone and it picks up my voice just fine.
-Call quality is really good, too. Haha, that's how great this phone is. I went through all the features in my head about how good this phone is and the last one I thought of is call quality. Not because it's bad or anything, but b/c the phone does all the things I've wanted in a smartphone, and never makes you feel dumb for trying to use them all.
So many of the menus and features are customizable that you really feel like the phone is your own. You look at the phone the way you like to look at it, not just the way the designer wanted.
The only thing I didn't like was that I sometimes move faster than the phone can keep up with. Like, if I'm going quickly from one feature to the next, the hourglass will spin for a second or two as it tries to catch up. It's a minor annoyance that I'll gladly put up with to have such an otherwise great device. I've always owned Samsung products before this phone, but now I don't know if I'll ever be able to not have a BlackBerry. Kudos to RIM.
Sorry for the length, this was a lot longer than I intended, but I'm just really excited about this phone after my first month of use. There's a reason the average review score is so high for this phone. Check out cnet or phonearena if you don't believe me.
