Hold Assist allows your iPhone to detect when you're placed on hold during a call and will then alert you when a live agent is on the line. Instead of listening to hold music, your iPhone keeps the call active in the background, allowing you to use other apps, and notifies you with a ring when someone is ready to talk.

From an ongoing call in which you've been placed on hold, tap the More icon.
If your iPhone detects you've been placed on hold, you may have the option to tap Hold immediately.
