Not enough power to operate smoothly
I received this for Christmas as a gift from my wife and at first I was psyched. That quickly faded when I discovered that operating more than 2 apps causes this tablet to stall and operate at a pathetic pace. So then I thought it is in need of a software upgrade. I checked for an update and initially it acted like it was going to start updating and then,..... nothing "update failed". Now every time I try to update the OS it is telling me that the software is up to date when nothing has been updated. Not to mention I tried to operate some simple apps that my samsung galaxy note phone handles without a problem, but on the tab 8.9 the system would freeze. I have nothing against Samsung - I love Samsung, I just think that this tablet was a mistake and so does Samsung obviously because the model is discontinued. My advice, spend the extra $25 to get the Galaxy Tab 10 which has a faster processor and more bells and whistles.
Prossmall size and light
Consway too slow, not enough bells and whistles, model is discontinued
No, I do not recommend this product.

Terrific size, powerful, easy to use, great value

I am an IT professional, and I travel quite a bit. I am coming from the original Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is of course a 7-inch tablet running Android 2.2. I really like the size of the 8.9, I find the 8.9 much more conducive to getting "real" work done. I access my email, do some document editing, blogging, and social networking from my mobile devices, so functionality is key.
The 8.9 also has a really fast processor, and although I have seem some applications move slowly, it seems pretty clear to me it was the applications, and not the device.
It took a little getting used to the tablet-optimized version of Android, but I like it. Some of the apps from the market are definitely optimized to take advantage of the extra screen real-estate, but even the ones that are not look beautiful. The screen is incredibly clear and easy on the eyes, and I find the experience of reading on the device to be quite pleasant, especially as compared to reading on touchscreen phones with much smaller screens.
I also purchased the Samsung Keyboard Dock for this device, and the two together make this a powerhouse for mobile workers. I truly have a laptop replacement and can type extensively when I need to without tiring out my thumbs! I particularly like that the Samsung-branded keyboard dock "hard docks" to the tablet, as opposed to pairing via bluetooth; it makes it feel more like a solid unit than 2 separate pieces.
Some people have commented on the lack of removable storage, and while this is less than ideal, it's not really a problem. It's pretty easy to move files around wirelessly using either the built in functionality or Wi-Fi File explorer (a free app available from the market). In fact, i think moving files around wirelessly is actually easier and faster than using SD cards, but it does mean you can only have 16 GB of data on your device at the same time. This really is not an issue for me, but it's something to consider.
Samsung does provide a way to store and access files externally, via an adapter, which might be a good investment if you want to take a lot of movies with you when you travel.
I am very happy with my device, though, and I won't give it up.
Note that with the refurbished device, I received the device and the data/charging cable, but I did not receive the USB AC adapter to plug it in to. Not an issue for me, I have plenty of generic USB wall adapters, but it's something to be aware of, as if you don't, that may represent an additional and unexpected expense.
Proslightweight, easy to operate one handed, useful accessories, laptop replacement, great size, bright screen, great value
