Guide to AutoPay with AT&T

Learn how to get the AT&T AutoPay discount, how AutoPay works and the benefits of AutoPay.

Automatic bill payment (or AutoPay) is a popular feature available at AT&T. It offers convenience, easier money management, and even a monthly discount. You can save up to $10 per phone line for wireless service and $10 for internet service (when you sign up for paperless billing), depending on your services and payment method. That means you could save up to $240 per year.

Read on to learn about how AutoPay works and the benefits (along with a few important considerations). You’ll also learn how to set up AutoPay on your AT&T account and how to get an AutoPay discount from AT&T.

How much of a discount does AT&T give for AutoPay?

At AT&T, the AutoPay discount amount varies by payment type. To be eligible for the AutoPay discount, you’ll have to sign up for paperless billing.

AutoPay discounts for AT&T wireless service

  • Use a bank account (checking or savings) for a monthly discount of $10 per phone line.
  • Use a debit card for a monthly discount of $5 per phone line.
  • Use the AT&T Points Plus Card from Citi for a monthly discount of $5 per phone line. (There’s no longer an AutoPay discount for other credit cards.)

Keep in mind you must maintain a valid email address to continue getting the discount. Another important note is some existing customers on select retired wireless plans may have different discounts. If that is the case for you, you should review your wireless bill for details.

AutoPay discounts for AT&T internet service

  • Use a bank account (checking or savings) for a monthly discount of $10.
  • Use a debit card for a monthly discount of $5.
  • Use the AT&T Points Plus Card from Citi for a monthly discount of $5. (There’s no longer an AutoPay discount for other credit cards.)

Keep in mind you must maintain a valid email address to continue getting the discount. Another important note is the AutoPay discount doesn’t apply for AT&T Internet Air® service.

How does AutoPay work at AT&T?

AutoPay is an easy, convenient, and secure way to pay your AT&T wireless or internet bill. When you sign up, AutoPay electronically transfers funds from your checking, savings, debit or credit card account to pay your AT&T bill. This means no more writing checks, buying stamps, or forgetting your payment.

How to set up AutoPay with AT&T

As an AT&T customer, you can use your bank account, debit card, or credit card to sign up for AutoPay. It just takes a few quick steps:

  1. Navigate to the Payment Center in your AT&T account
  2. Select the account for which you’d like to enable AutoPay
  3. Select AutoPay under AutoPay & paperless billing
  4. Follow the prompts to finish signing up
  5. If desired, repeat these steps for your other account(s)

The AutoPay discount will automatically start once the AutoPay and paperless billing settings have been applied. After you sign up for AutoPay, it can take up to two bill periods for AutoPay to start. You should pay your AT&T bill as usual until you see AutoPay is scheduled for (date) in one of these places:

  • Paper bill: Look in the upper-right corner of the first page
  • Online: Go to your AT&T Account overview and review the Total balance section

Did you know?

If you set up AutoPay with the AT&T Points Plus Card from Citi, AT&T will charge your card after your billing cycle ends. If you use a checking or savings account or a debit card, AT&T will charge your account or debit card before the payment due date.

What are the benefits of AutoPay?

There are quite a few potential benefits when you sign up for AutoPay with AT&T, including:

  • Saving money: Depending on your payment type (for example, bank account, debit card or credit card), you can save up to $10 per phone line per month on your AT&T wireless service and/or up to $10 per month on your AT&T internet service. Just remember, you’ll also need to sign up for paperless billing to qualify for the discount. As an added bonus, when paperless billing is combined with AutoPay, you cut the risk of theft for mail-in payments.

  • Saving time: AutoPay can save you time by automatically paying your AT&T bill each month. And, if you sign up for bill threshold notifications, you won’t have to worry about overlooking a bill that’s higher than expected.

  • Avoiding late fees: AutoPay can help you avoid late fees by ensuring your bill is always paid on time.

  • Potentially improving your credit score: Over time, consistent payments made with your credit card can help improve your credit score. A healthy credit score can help you qualify for loans and get the lowest available interest rates.

What should I consider before signing up for AutoPay?

When signing up for AutoPay for any type of bill, you’ll likely have some questions. Here are some things you may want to consider:

  • Protecting yourself from overdraft fees: If you set up AutoPay with a bank account or debit card, you’ll want to make sure there’s enough money in your account. If not, you might incur overdraft fees from your bank. Luckily, a lot of people find their AT&T wireless and internet bills don’t vary much from month to month. If you’re worried about variance in your monthly bills, you can set up bill threshold notifications, so you’ll always know when your bill exceeds a dollar amount specified by you. Learn how to get bill threshold notifications

  • Watching out for billing errors: In the rare case of a billing error, a bill threshold notification could save the day. If you experience any payment issues, like a charge on your credit or debit card that doesn’t look right, a payment amount that appears to be incorrect, an incorrectly scheduled AutoPay payment or a payment that didn’t post, get help resolving common payment issues.

  • Having the freedom to cancel: The good news is you can pause or cancel AutoPay at any time. If you want to take a break from AutoPay for a month, you can pause AutoPay for your chosen account. You’ll still have to pay your bill by the due date, and automatic payments will resume as usual the following month. If you pause AutoPay for more than one month, AutoPay and any AutoPay discounts may be removed from your account. Keep in mind you can't discontinue AutoPay if your service or credit status requires automatic payments. If you decide to cancel AutoPay, and you’d like to start getting a paper bill in the mail, you’ll also want to cancel paperless billing.

  • Protecting yourself from security risks: You might be wary of storing your bank account, debit card or credit card information for AutoPay. But worry not—AT&T’s secure system protects bank account and credit card information. Review security options for your AT&T accounts
